Post-game unlocks and your next playthrough

Finishing Onimusha: Way of the Sword unlocks Carnage, the hard difficulty used for New Game Plus. You can also choose Continue to return to the point before the final mission and finish activities on your existing playthrough. Starting NG+ resets the campaign and several equipment systems while preserving selected abilities, items, and collection records. Decide whether you want cleanup or a harder replay before selecting your next option.

Carnage is a commitment for that new run because you cannot lower it to Story or Action afterward. It also removes Action Prompts, so familiarity with attack timing matters more than remembering the button icons from your first playthrough. The Onimusha difficulty settings guide explains the available settings and the difference between assistance options and difficulty. Keep a separate save if you want an easy way to revisit your completed first run.

Continue after the ending for cleanup

Continue returns you to the world before The Clash At Rendaino rather than opening a new chapter after the ending. This gives you a place to revisit unfinished side activities, compare collection progress, and prepare before restarting. The final mission has a point-of-no-return warning, so make a manual save before entering it. Treat that save as your cleanup file and use another slot for the harder campaign.

Choose a specific cleanup target each time you return to Kyoto. For example, finish one remaining side activity before moving to an equipment objective, rather than repeatedly checking every menu without a plan. Keep a short list of the objectives you still care about and cross them off as their requirements are met. You do not have to complete a trophy checklist simply because the credits have rolled.

The Onimusha trophy guide is useful if your next goal is the Platinum. If you only want to judge the time commitment of a second playthrough, use the story length and completion guide instead. Those are different goals, and the work you choose after the ending should reflect that difference. A player returning for combat practice can spend their time very differently from someone finishing every collection.

Start New Game Plus on Carnage

Use your completed save when beginning New Game Plus from the main menu. Carnage becomes available after the first story completion, including a clear on Story difficulty. You do not need to repeat your first playthrough on Action just to qualify. Once you confirm Carnage, plan to finish that run at its higher difficulty.

  1. Finish the main story and view the ending.
  2. Return to your first playthrough if you still want to spend resources or complete side activities.
  3. Preserve a separate manual save before committing to the restart.
  4. Choose New Game on the title screen, then select your completed-game data for the new playthrough.
  5. Select Carnage and read the confirmation before starting.

Before confirming, consider whether you are ready to replay the opening with lower equipment levels. Familiarity with later bosses does not automatically make the opening comfortable when your old sword improvements are gone. If your first clear relied heavily on repeated healing, practice the attacks that caused those mistakes before beginning. That preparation is a recommendation, not another unlock condition.

New Game Plus carryover and resets

NG+ preserves parts of Musashi's development, but it does not copy the entire endgame character into a fresh world. Cosmetic ownership and equipment strength are separate: keeping an appearance does not preserve its combat upgrades. Likewise, a retained ability or item does not guarantee that its menu or story-dependent function is immediately accessible. Use the table to distinguish permanent preparation from systems you will rebuild.

Do not read “items carry over” as a promise that every material stays in your inventory. Equipment enhancement supplies belong to the reset category even though other items remain. Check the purpose of an item before deciding whether to save it, spend it, or ignore it. This distinction matters most when you are choosing how to use the last resources on your completed file.

Spend remaining resources on lasting preparation

Prioritize improvements that remain useful after the reset: your preferred skills, charms, and healing pouch. Pick upgrades that support actions you actually use rather than spreading resources across options you rarely equip. A defensive choice can be worthwhile if it helps you survive a recurring mistake, while an offensive choice only pays off when you can use its openings. Look at the next upgrade's effect before buying it and choose deliberately.

Equipment upgrades still have a role on the original file. They can help with your final mission, current cleanup, or practice even though those levels will not survive NG+. The decision is therefore about your immediate objective as well as carryover. Avoid buying an equipment improvement solely because you expect the same level to be waiting in the new campaign.

Save useful consumables for difficult encounters when you can, but do not turn conservation into a rule that makes the first clear unnecessarily frustrating. A recovery item used to finish a troublesome fight has served a purpose. Before restarting, review what remains and identify the supplies you want to reserve for later bosses. Keeping that plan simple makes it easier to follow under pressure.

Restore access before rebuilding your loadout

The opening of NG+ can temporarily restrict systems whose progress has been retained. Continue through the early story when an equipment or ability function has not reopened yet. Once the relevant interface is available, inspect your abilities, pouch, and charms before assuming your preferred setup is active. Then check equipment enhancement levels separately so you know what still needs rebuilding.

Use the Onimusha weapons guide when deciding which combat tools suit your approach. Keep that decision separate from the carryover table: an ability record, weapon access, a sword appearance, and an enhancement level describe different things. For an opening fight, build your plan around the tools currently available on your save. Add other options as they become usable instead of trying to force your old endgame routine immediately.

Boss Rematch access and completion

Boss Rematch is available through the Practice Grounds unlocked during The Oni's Apprentice, so the activity itself is not exclusively a reward for finishing the story. Ring the bell in Emma's Hall to enter the grounds, then speak to Takamura and select Boss Rematch. Choose an opponent and difficulty from the rematch interface. A harder rematch victory also completes that opponent's lower difficulty results.

The late-game objectives include finishing the campaign on Carnage and defeating the rematch opponents at the required difficulty. Keep those objectives separate when checking your progress, because a campaign boss victory is not the same menu entry as a rematch clear. The boss roster includes 18 encounters, with different versions of some opponents. Read the selected encounter's name instead of assuming one victory covers every version of that character.

Use rematches to isolate a problem rather than simply repeating full fights at maximum speed. Spend an attempt watching the attack that usually catches you, then practice a consistent response before adding extra damage. Deflect and Issen can create stamina pressure, while dodging remains useful against attacks you cannot yet counter reliably. If you keep failing at the same moment, changing that one response is more productive than changing your entire loadout after every attempt.

Separate completion rewards from existing bonuses

Your first story clear unlocks the Panda costume with its matching sword appearance and bamboo scabbard, plus the Wataru costume. These give you an immediate cosmetic reason to revisit the appearance options after the ending. Treat the sword appearance as a cosmetic reward, not a promise of stronger weapon statistics. Keeping the outfit or sword look in NG+ does not prevent equipment enhancement levels from resetting.

Completing Carnage adds another sword skin, a haori coat, and an outfit, while clearing every Boss Rematch on Carnage can also unlock a costume. Those are separate completion milestones, so beginning a Carnage run is not enough to claim its finishing rewards. Pre-order and edition bonuses belong to their purchase conditions rather than automatically becoming post-game unlocks. Review each reward notification as you complete the relevant activity so you know which appearance you have just earned.

A practical order is to finish any cleanup you still want, prepare the improvements that survive, and then begin Carnage. Rebuild equipment as the campaign opens up, and return to rematches when you are ready to pursue their specific completion records. Keep your original manual save available until you are satisfied with both files. This lets you choose between exploration and harder combat without losing track of which playthrough holds your progress.
